Solar powered water supply for Finkolo / Mali in
cooperation with Sundance, September 2016
The association SunDance, founded in 1999, is a non-profit organization who builds solar-powered drinking water supplies in Mali and has been certified since 2008 by ZEWO. The solar-powered water supply in Finkolo was financed by Water for Life in August 2016 with EUR 17'500.--.

Pre-history:
SunDance visits the town Finkolo regularly since 2006. Several factors have led to greater growth. After the unrests in northern Mali in 2012, many people fled to their relatives in the south. They slowly return since 2014 back home. Both, the agriculture and the gold rush, increase the population figures steadily.

Project history:
Only a new construction could meet the increased water demand. An extension of the 2006 rehabilitated construction was out of question. Therefore, a 2.7kW system, seven wells and a pipeline network of 2,600 meters were built. The construction was launched on 15 May 2015 and the water was delivered for free to the population during one month.

Seven well supervisors (including two women) are opening the wells in the morning, noon and evening for one hour. The rest period between these times is necessary so that the reservoir can be refilled. The supervisors do also register who is getting how much water - because the water now has a price!
